Washers are usually paired up and used with threaded fasteners, which expands the contact surface with the fastener’s top. When threaded fasteners are pushed into the parts’ surface, washers will be moved to the bottom, then they will absorb and decrease the compression force of the bolt. Toothed lock washers can be classified as internal tooth and external tooth. The design of the tooth provides the good stability to prevent loosening. Also, the tooth will absorb the vibration and tighten the nut and bolt. And the semi-coiled design makes it create the tension and tighten the parts.

Compared with the nut, the toothed lock washer is easy to loosen when there is the vibration. As a result, the bolt is hard to be fixed into the threaded holes. However, if we use the toothed lock washer, the bolt can be easily fixed into the parts.

Internal tooth lock:
In other countries, we call internal tooth lock washers as star washers due to its star shape, its internal tooth is radially inward and extends to the bearing surface. Due to the smooth outer rim, the internal tooth lock washer can fix the parts such as small-sized bolt head. Compared with the external tooth lock washer, the internal tooth lock washer is used for fixing the parts with anti-vibration ability.

External tooth lock:
In other countries, we call external tooth lock washers as star washers due to its star shape. The external tooth is radially outward and extends to the bearing surface. The external lock washer is paired up and used with larger bolt head and screw, and it will fix the parts under the nut. Compared with the internal lock washer, the external lock washer is used for decreasing part’s loosening, which creates the higher torsion resistance and retention.
